Women fashion of 20th century is beyond different from the previous era in fashion history. For the revolution of technology, culture, and social norms, fashion started to get into the trend cycle. Everyone started to love changing their fashion from time to time. The variation of changes had turned out very fast.
1900s Women Fashion
Dress: “S-bend” or “Health” corset became popular in the 90s time. It was a style of wearer’s posture that was no more healthful than its ancestor. Women liked to wear Silhouettes. This period is called Edwardian and at the end of this decade, the fashion shifted to girdles. Women were also introduced to leisure apparel, such as; blazers, long skirts, and woolen sweaters.
Makeover: They used Light powder for the face, Gold, and silver for evening parties as eye shadow, Mascara for darkening light lashes, Red Lipstick, and rouge applied all over the cheeks for blush. They liked to keep their hair shorter.
Accessories: They used umbrellas as accessories, with big hats made of fabrics and flowers or fruits.
Footwear: They used half-boots which were ideal for walking heights with a lower heel and pointed toe. They laced halfway up and looped the rest.
1910s Women Fashion
Dress: In the 1910s, hemlines of the dresses crept up slightly past the ankle. But, this matched with “hobble skirts” which were designed by Paul Poiret. The dresses started to become narrow through the ankle and sometimes banded below the knee.
Makeover: They used Light colors like Rice Face Powder and Pearl Powder were the only colors available on the market. Blush was now sold compact and could be found in pink color. Darker color eye makeup became trendy which was inspired by movies. Maybelline Mascara was a fashionable eyeliner too at this time. Women started to use eyeshadows, or burning matchsticks in a pint and placed them on the eyelids. The lipsticks became deeper. Powder for the face, Gold and silver for evening parties as eye shadow, Mascara for darkening light lashes, Red Lipstick, and rouge was applied all over the cheeks for blush. They like to keep their hair shorter.
Accessories: They used ribbons and feathers on their hats during the Edwardian Period. This hat was also called the “Gainsborough Hat”. They also used hairpins for hair styling. Umbrellas and hand purses were also fashion accessories too.
Footwear: They used boots made of satin ivory/rose in button-up with lace and satin ribbon. These boots would typically be used in the daytime with the day time clothes. In the evening, they wore pump heel shoes.
1920s Women Fashion
Dress: The most popular dress was the “flapper” in the 1920s time. Some other clothing styles were equally as popular too. Skirt lengths became fluctuated a bit and women grabbed flashy evening attire, comfortable sportswear, conservative work suits, and also dresses either hung straight or flared at the hip. Despite the variety, women’s 1920s fashions broke free of the physical and social restrictions of the previous century. The garçonne look was very popular from 1925-1926 and again from 1928-1929. Curveless and straight dresses were worn with bust-flattening brassieres. They liked to show a thin waist and wore belts around the hips. The chemise-type dress became popular from 1925 to 1928 or 1929. It hung straight down to the knees.
Makeover: For makeup, women painted their faces with bright red lipstick, dramatic blush, eyeliner, and mascara so that they looked more appealing to men.
Accessories: Women wore long fur coats fur with straight, curveless cut dresses during this time. It was important to have tones of accessories in the women’s wardrobe, such as long strands of pearls, bangles, dangling earrings, fur, large bracelets, etc.
Footwear: The T-strap heels were very popular footwear for women as formal footwear. Paired with a low and curved heel, the T-strap heel was a stuffy but sturdy shoe favored among the flapper subculture.
1930s Women Fashion
Dress: In the 1930s decade, floral prints, polka dots, and muted color dresses were the popular daytime fashion. The dresses had modest tops, wide sleeves or cape effects, and a slender bias-cut body with flair at the hem. The length range of the hem was from the floor to slightly below the knee and the matching thin belt at the high waist. Elegant Bias cut floor-length gowns with sweeping flared hems were the evening dress style of this time. The dresses had modest necklines on the front that were opened up to bare backs. Black, pastels, and jewel tones in silk, satin, or lace were used in the gown’s design.
Makeover: During this time, women were putting more feminine emphasis on the face. Their Hairstyle grew longer and became curled & wavy. Using lighter shades and pale ivory foundations, were like female icons which made women look very soft and delicate in the 1930s.
Accessories: Women started to pick up simple art deco designs or small plain pearls as jewelry. The earrings and bracelets were preferred over flashy necklaces and pins. They used hand gloves sometimes and a small hand purse when needed.
Footwear: In the 1930s, women always wore high heels, and even sports shoes had a small flat heels. military, Cuban, Spanish, and also built-up heels were very fashionable in the 1930s. Oxford shoes were quite popular too.
1940s Women Fashion
Dress: In the 1940s time, popular dress style was padded shoulders, puffed sleeves, menswear style collars, matching fabric belts, and an “A” line skirt just below the knee. Earth-tone colors, stripes, and small floral prints were in style too. Slightly darker than natural color with matching linings up the back, and women drew lines down the back of their legs with an eyebrow pencil for styling.
Makeover: Very little makeup was used on the eyes. During the day, women wore a lighter version of dark brown and black mascara. Some only used Vaseline brushed on the lashes. Mascara might be paste, liquid, or cake and have a small lash brush.
Accessories: Belts, Gloves, Head Scarf. The most fashionable accessories for a woman were a purse and hat. They used them to fulfilling their outfit. Most women wore a belt to decorate their dresses, suits, or skirts.
Footwear: Women’s shoes in the 1940s were classified as oxfords, pumps, sandals, and boots ( high shoes). 1940s Oxford was trendy for general purposes because of its supportive part for the arches and ankles. Military oxfords were also very popular and comfortable.
1950s Women Fashion
Dress: The “New Look” silhouette that was designed by Christian Dior debuted, had shaped the decade to come. It had a nipped-in waist, structured bust, and voluminous taffeta layered skirt also was the antithesis of wartime outfits. Even lighter fabrics also became common for middle-class women. The stateside kept much of femininity, full mid-calf skirts, cinch-waist dresses, and sweater sets.
Makeover: Women started to use cream or liquid foundations, set them with a powder, and then apply a pink or rose-colored blush to their cheeks. For eyes, defining brows that were one shade darker than their natural hue were paired with subtle shadows, winged eyeliner, and mascara on the upper lashes.
Accessories: Several fashion accessories supplemented the woman’s 1950s wardrobe. Handbags and gloves were still fashionable. Small Pearl necklaces, bracelets, and earrings became common accessories too.
Footwear: 1950s women started to wear kitten heel pumps, ballet flats, mules, moccasins, tennis shoes, sandals, and the dramatic stiletto heel shoe.
1960s Women Fashion
Dress: The 1960s were an age of fashion innovation for women fashion. The most popular garments of the early 1960s were drainpipe jeans and capri pants, which were modeled by Audrey Hepburn. The casual dress became more unisex with plaid button-down shirts which were worn with slim blue jeans, comfortable slacks, or skirts.
Makeover: 1960s women would typically apply pale cream foundations to cover the entirety of their face with a matte finish, set with a bit of translucent powder. However, the combination formula of foundation and powder was also created in the 60s and became a trendy product for women.
Accessories: They used hats, wigs, gloves, scarves, sunglasses, purses, headbands, belts, and hair wigs as their accessories.
Footwear: Footwear for women included low-heeled sandals and kitten-heeled pumps, also because of the trendy white go-go boots. Shoes, boots, and purses were often made from leather or vinyl. The Beatles wore elastic-sided boots almost like Winkle-pickers with pointed toes and Cuban heels.
1970s Women Fashion
Dress: In the 1970s, Tie-dye shirts, Mexican ‘peasant’ blouses, folk-embroidered Hungarian blouses, ponchos, capes, and military surplus clothing were the most fashionable garments for women. The bottom attire for ladies was frayed jeans, bell bottoms, midi skirts, gauchos, and ankle-length maxi dresses.
Makeover: Black mascara, black eyeliner, and shimmer eye shadows make the eyes very dramatic. During the late ’70s, softer looks become more fashionable and women started to use soft foundations instead of powders. The eyes were kept neutral for daytime with mascara used on the highest and bottom lashes.
Accessories: Popular styles included bell-bottom pants, frayed jeans, midi skirts, maxi dresses, Tie-dye, peasant blouses, and ponchos. Some accessories which helped to collect the ’70s Hippie outfits were included chokers, headbands, scarves, and jewelry that might have made from wood, stones, feathers, and beads.
Footwear: Though the style had literally been around for centuries, platform shoes were inexorably linked with the 70s. They had been worn throughout history Greek actors used them to elevate important characters on the stage, and within the Middle Ages that they had a really practical purpose to stay your feet from getting wet.
1980s Women Fashion
